Is it possible to feel scared and brave at the same time? Yes! Yes it is. (And I speak from experience!) Whether we’re young or old, we all experience “mixed-together” feelings. It’s a normal part of life, so it’s important for kids to understand that it’s totally okay.
Today, I would like to share a book written by Lory Britain with you called I’m Happy-Sad Today. It is written for younger elementary aged children and those as young as Pre-K. The main character of the book is a young girl who shares about what it’s like to have mixed-together feelings. Throughout the book, readers and listeners will see different examples she shares. Along with feeling happy-sad, she tells about feeling scared-brave, friendly-shy, nervous-excited, and sad-mad. Along with a few more examples, she explains that she doesn’t have to choose one feeling because it’s okay to feel more than one at a time. She even tells readers and listeners what she does when she has different feelings. Sometimes she talks about them with her friends or with grown-ups. Other times she may just be with someone without talking. She can also use art or movement to express her feelings too. She even shares some of her made up feeling words like “smad” for sad & mad and “shappy” for shy & happy.
This is an adorable book that is beautifully illustrated with diverse characters throughout. This book touches on familiar feeling words for young children, but it also introduces a few bigger words like determined and frustrated which is great for building emotional vocabulary. “A Guide for Caring Adults” is included after the story which gives tips and strategies to use when sharing the book along with several ideas for activities and discussions. This will be a great book to share with my Kindergarten friends during my school counseling lessons or individual sessions this coming school year!
